There are a few things you can do to help promote your blog.
First, we help people find your blogs by promoting them in various ways
around the site. For example, we have the "recently updated blogs" list.
When you post or a comment is left on your blog, it appears on the
recently updated list, which makes it more likely to be seen and visited
by others.
But just posting anything to your blog won't help... you need to have
something useful for them to read. Blogs are not "message boards", you
need to direct the conversation. Post something that others may find
interesting. Your thoughts or views on something or teach someone
something about an area of interest you have, for example. If your blog
just says "this is my blog, write to me", people will just skip by your
blog.
So, writing interesting content and "keeping it fresh" are very important.
What we mean by "keeping it fresh" is to update it often. Once people
find something they like, they will want to come back and read more. If
you never update your blog, people will become less interested and move on.
With 1,000s of blogs on our site alone, people only have so much time and
can't possibly read them all.
If you have a website, you can link to your blog which will help visitors
to your site find your blog, and will may improve your "ranking" in the
search engines... meaning you will appear higher when searches are done.
Regarding the above, writing a lot of relevant content on a popular
topic means you may start to appear in popular search engines and blog
search sites on terms related to your blog. For example, I run the
"Funny Captions" blog here on Blogstream (funnycaptions.blogstream.com).
Some search engines have begun to locate my page and when people search
the web for "funny captions", my blog appears. This brings more people
to my blog from outside of Blogstream.
